Ocala,FL Formely of Altoona- James “Jim” Oakes, 81, died on June 1, 2017 from complications due to an automobile accident. Jim was born into this life on December 22, 1935 in Altoona, PA to the late Ralph and Jean Bigelow Oakes. He is survived by his wife of 44yrs., Kathryn Oakes, Ocala,FL; his sons, David Oakes, Hughesville, MD, Doug Oakes (Carrie), Woodstock, GA; his daughter, Carolyn Fontana(Jim), Leonardtown, MD; his twin brothers, Ron Oakes (Chris), MD, Don Oakes(Joanne), Ocala, FL; his sister, Jill Oakes, Roaring Springs, PA; his grandchildren, Kevin Fontana, D.J. Oakes, Maddie Oakes and Emma Oakes.

He is preceded in death by his brothers,  Bill Oakes and infant twin brother; his sisters, Joanne Burkett and Barbara Mickel.

Jim was born and raised in Altoona and Roaring Springs, PA. At the age of seventeen he enlisted into the United States Navy. He was an administrator, cryptologist and educator who taught Naval Science. Jim retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW04). After a 31 year career with the United States Navy he went back to school and obtained his degree in Business Education. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Roaring Springs, PA, past President of the Sunshine Singers in On Top of the World, member of  101 Grandparents who amongst others read to the kids at Romeo Elementary School. Jim enjoyed walking, exercising, and Gator sports. He was a kind, gentle soul who dearly loved his family and friends and will be missed but never forgotten as he will forever be in our hearts. We love you and one day we will see you again at home in the eternal city with Jesus.

 

Memorial Services celebrating Jim’s life will be held on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church with full Military Honors. Internment will be held at a later date at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
