Laurence Thomas “Tyke” Furey

It is with great sadness that the family of Laurence Thomas “Tyke” Furey announces his death.  Tyke died at home in Dunnellon on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at the age of 88.  He was born on January 7, 1930 in Seattle WA and was the son of Captain Robert H. and Marie (Clark) Furey.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert and Bartley.

Tyke graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and began a 30-year naval career that culminated in the rank of Captain.  His proudest moments were as Commanding Officer of the USS Borie and USS Damato.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Pauline and his children, Marie (Mike) Dasovich, Lauren (Tret) Furey, Lisa, Julie and Stephen Dukkony; his grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Wolff, Tracy(Sam) Jennings, Nathaniel Fureymoore, Margaret Fureymoore, Caroline Furey and Brighid Furey; and his great grandchildren, Connor, Colin, Marisa, Maura Wolff and Lilah and Whitt Jennings.

Tyke enjoyed reading history and anything to do with the Naval Academy.  In younger times he enjoyed sailing, tennis, golf and running.  He was involved with the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club of Ocala.

Local arrangements are being handled by Roberts Funeral Home of Dunnellon.  A funeral mass at St Andrews Chapel, Annapolis MD followed by committal in the Naval Academy Columbarium is being arranged at this time (date and time to be determined).
