Alfred Joseph Bingham, Sr.

Alfred Joseph Bingham, Sr. age 80, of Dunnellon, FL. passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  Alfred was born in Watauga County North Carolina on December 7, 1938 to Lucy Mae Cornett and Robert Knox Bingham, Jr. whose father, R.K. Bingham Sr. was a doctor and lived in the house that later became the Daniel Boone Inn, Boone, NC. He was a graduate of Cove Creek High School where he was a star basketball player.

He was raised by his grandparents, Mable & William Alfred Cornett, in Creston, NC before traveling to Washington DC where he was an entrepreneur running a variety of businesses such as a Sunoco service station in Arlandria; Charles Chips; and a TV Repair shop in Alexandria, Virginia. He served in the Army and was a member of the American Legion Post, Manassas, VA. In 1958 he began working for the US Federal Government with Department of Defense, Civil Service Commission and retired from the Department of Energy in 1995.

Mr. Bingham is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan D. Bingham and children, Terry Forline, Debbie Bingham, Jonathen Bingham, Christina Pierce, and Allie Bingham Jr. (deceased), sisters Barbara Stalcup, Kathy Williams and Lillian McColl and brother Warren Alvis, many grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Following in his parents’ footsteps (Lucy Alvis, PGM of Virginia & Walter G Alvis, PGP of VA) he was an active member of the local masonic community before his health started to decline in 2017. He was initiated at Camp Springs Lodge #227 in Maryland in June 1980. He was a member of Manasseh Lodge #182, Manassas, VA; Andrew Jackson #120, Alexandria, VA. and an honorary member of Dunnellon Lodge #136. He was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star on January 12, 1982 at Mount Vernon Chapter #178 (now Occoquan Chapter #59) and was a member of Inverness Chapter #65 (formerly Dunnellon Chapter #235). He received the appointment of Grand Representative of Louisiana in Florida in 2013-14. Alfred was Chapter Dad for Prince William Chapter, Order of DeMolay in Manassas during the years 1990-1996. In recognition of his services he received the Cross of Honor in 1994 and the Legion of Honor during an Investiture at the George Washington Masonic Memorial Temple.
