Carol Angela (Berton) Harwood

June 23, 1933 — May 26, 2020

Citrus Springs

Carol Harwood (nee Berton) suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke on May 25, 2020 and subsequently passed on May 26, 2020.

Carol was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on June 23, 1933.  She married and gave birth to five children – Julie, Steven (deceased), Jeffrey, Becky, and Lisa.  She divorced and was a single mother until 1969 when she met and married Basil (Dave) Harwood.  She immediately gained two more children – Mark and Laurie (deceased).  She and Dave celebrated 50 wonderful years together on December 12, 2019 in Malaga, New Jersey which was their home for 32 years.  For twenty-five of those years Carol, a lifetime devout Catholic, was the Choir Director of St. Bridget’s Church in Glassboro, New Jersey.  She served in this capacity and received no monetary recompense.  She is beloved and will be remembered in that community forever.  Pope Francis issued a proclamation lauding her for her unselfish and devoted service to The Church on May 30, 2015.

They moved to Citrus Springs, Florida to be near their daughter, Lisa, in January 2020.  Carol suffered from dementia for the last three years of her life and was tormented by the fact that she could not live a normal life and do the things she used to do.  The Corona Virus compounded the dementia in that she was secluded for two months.  Just when she was able to get out and obtain the much needed social interaction the devastating explosion in her brain occurred and her wonderful life came to an end.

During the many good years they traveled all over the United States and to England to Dave’s home of birth.  They also went on three cruises and spent a week in Jamaica when her granddaughter Tabitha was married.

In addition to five surviving children, Carol leaves behind twelve beautiful grandchildren and sixteen wonderful great-grandchildren.

Carol leaves a huge vacancy in the lives of her family and friends which will never be filled – it is eternal as she is in our lives.  Fortunately, we have the wonderful memories of the most beautiful, inside and out, and the most unselfish and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and wife who blessed us all with her being.  She will be missed but never ever  forgotten.

Memorial contributions in Carol’s memory can be sent to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
