TOUCHBERRY, Eddie “Burt”
Mr. Eddie “Burt” Touchberry, 80, of Dunnellon, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at his residence. A native of Columbia, SC, he graduated from Dentsville High School where he was involved in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Florida where he was a two-sport star in baseball and basketball. In baseball, he was a three-year starting pitcher and an All-SEC selection. He helped lead the Gators to an SEC Championship in 1956 and as a senior in 1957, he pitched ten games, with twenty-eight strikeouts and an earned run average of 0.81 – still the best single season ERA in Gators history. He was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame as a Gator Great in 1983.
In 1958 he married his college sweetheart Jeanette Hale. He was a proud veteran of the US Army, after which he had a short professional baseball career in the Cincinnati organization.
He contributed to the safe operation and continued stellar safety success today of Goodfellow Brothers Construction before retiring and moving back to Dunnellon, FL in 2005. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, and a Board Member of the Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists for the State of California.
Burt is survived by his wife Jeanette, his younger brother, his 4 children and his 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Touchberry will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Roberts Funeral Home, 19939 E. Pennsylvania Avenue, Dunnellon, FL, with Pastor David Hanks officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until service time. Mr. Touchberry will be laid to rest at a later date in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
