Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Edwin P. “Hap” Hapgood, a distinguished U.S. Air Force veteran, embarked on his final flight on December 10, 2025, at the age of 93, in Ocala (FL) leaving behind a legacy of courage and service.
Born in Springfield, MA, on May 9, 1932, he answered the call of duty by enlisting in the Air Force in 1952, retiring after 20 years of service.
Beyond the flight line, he was a devoted husband to Carol (Ryder), who preceded him on December 21, 2018. He was a loving father to three sons and daughters-in-law: Jim Hapgood (Etta) of Ocala (FL); Mark Hapgood (Suzanne) of Wethersfield (CT); and Doug Hapgood (Cheryl) of Ocala (FL).
He leaves behind four grandchildren—Lindsay (Marshall), Tyler (Katelyn), Alexander, and Alaina (Chris)—and five great-grandchildren: Ryder, Riley, Tessa, Bronson, and Harper. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Eileen Whitten (Willis), of Ocala (FL).
He was admired for his integrity and generosity, always ready to share a story or lend a helping hand. His love of golf, UConn sports, singing in the barbershop quartet, and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends brought him great joy.
He now joins the angels he so often flew with, a guardian watching from above.
May Godspeed—fly high and rest in peace, Colonel.
Committal Services with full military honors will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
