Eva “LaVaughn” Hess, 77, long time resident of Dunnellon, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, in Lakeland, Fla., after a lengthy battle with dementia/Alzheimer’s.
She was an antique dealer/appraiser who operated the “Gingerbread House” antique store from 1974-2005. She also catered and at one point ran a tea room that was featured in a national magazine.
She was very busy in the community. She loved helping the arts, being an artist herself. She loved music, painting and flower arranging. She was also a published poet, a charter member of the “Gingerbread Poets”, and a member of the Florida State Poets Association. Those who knew her would say that she was very generous and honest: a great person.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. “Bob” Hess and her granddaughter, Michelle Gibbs.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Cline of French Settlement, La., Jennifer Burrows of Lakeland; son, Samuel Gibbs of Ocala; one step-daughter, Dr. Salinda Roch of Quebec, Canada; three step-sons, John Hess of Land O’ Lakes, Dr. Robert E. Hess Jr. of Casselberry, Charles Hess of Crawfordville; three sisters, Johnavie McCarty of Pennsylvania, Linda McCoy of Crowdersport, N.C. and Geneva Straight of Dunnellon; 12 grand and step grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at 12 p.m., at Holy Faith Episcopal church in Dunnellon. Flowers may be sent to the church at 19924 W. Blue Cove Dr., Dunnellon, FL 34432.
