Harry Douglas “Doug” Davis of Ocala, FL passed away on June 7, 2023, at the age of 82. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
Born on March 7, 1941, in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the elder son of the late Harry Maxwell and Mae Eiring Davis. His father’s employment with the FBI took the family to several cities before they settled in Auburn, Alabama initially, where his Father worked for Auburn University, and then at age 10, the family moved permanently to Valdosta, GA.
Doug’s Highschool years revolved around playing on the Champion Valdosta Golf Team and playing the trumpet in the high school band. Doug was an avid golfer and loved the game from a young age. He would ride his bike every day after school to the golf course to caddy. These were some of his favorite memories and he loved to tell the stories of his caddying days for years to come. Doug was recruited to play golf at Florida State University, where he would later become Team Captain. He was active in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served as President in his senior year. He received his master’s degree in accounting and several scholastic awards for academic achievement, including the SAE Besser Lindsey Award for achievement in athletics, scholarship and campus organizations. He was a member of the prestigious Garnet and Gold Key leadership honor society.
After graduating from Florida State University, he taught accounting at FSU and then joined Price Waterhouse as a CPA in Atlanta and later Tampa. From there, he moved to Ocala to be closer to his wife’s family and practiced accounting for a number of years. He developed an interest in banking and went on to develop several community banks in Florida.
Doug is survived by his wife, Martha Jane Edwards Davis, to whom he was married for 58 years; his brother Roger (Carol); his daughters Meredith Tracy (Barry), Lauren Novak (Jim), and Reynolds DeLisle (Joe); his grandchildren: Lauren Tracy Furst (Mark), Kirkland Tracy, Taylor Tracy (Airen), Davis Novak, Henry DeLisle, and Sam DeLisle; and his great-grandson Liam Furst.
