Hugh, a 27 year resident of Inglis, Florida, passed away peacefully at Life Care Center of Citrus County on November 10, 2014 at 90 years of age following a brief illness.
Hugh was born on September 16, 1924 in Buffalo, New York to Hugh Bannister, Sr. and (Anna) Bernice Erickson. He grew up in the Detroit, Michigan area.
He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942 and served as Seaman First Class on LSTs in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1944.
In 1948 while visiting his grandparents in Ashland’s east end on his way to an adventure in Alaska, he met Sally Prentice. They were married on October 16, 1948, and Hugh often laughed that he never made the Alaska trip.
Hugh was a Great Lakes Merchant Marine Officer, working his way up from coal passer to oiler, third, second, first, and then Chief Engineer. He spent many winters at the Seaway Hotel in Duluth, MN while attending the American Maritime Officer’s Engineer School to advance his career. He worked for Gartland, Reiss and American Steamship companies and Amoco Oil Company among others in his 25 year career. In 1979 Hugh and Sally moved bag and baggage to Eustis, Florida. They bought a mobile and lived there until moving to Inglis in 1987. Hugh finally retired in 1983.
Fishing was Hugh’s lifetime passion, and many in northern Wisconsin will remember him for creating the BanTee Beetle, a popular deep water ice fishing lake trout bobbing bait.
He maintained lifetime memberships in the VFW, the Elks Club and North Wisconsin Rod and Gun Club, and was a longtime member of the Moose.
Hugh is survived by wife Sally of Inglis, FL; daughter Ann (Dan) Green of Ashland, WI; granddaughter Rebecca Anderson (Jeff Rathsack) and great-grandchildren Zoe and Alexander Rathsack, all of Juda, WI; grandson Philip (Melissa) Green of Baraboo, WI; grandson Dustin Green of Atlanta, GA; and nieces and nephews in Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Georgia.
A celebration of Hugh’s life will be held at the AMVET clubhouse in Inglis, Florida at 1:00pm on Thursday, November 20, 2014. He will be interred in the Veteran’s Cemetery of Spooner, Wisconsin at a future date.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Citrus County and the Nature Coast or Life Care Center of Citrus County.
