James “Jim” Loftin Johnson, age 76, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, at 6:20 a.m. in Ocala, Florida.
Jim was born on January 24, 1949, in Rockledge, Florida, and grew up in Miami, where he graduated from Palmetto High School. He went on to attend Florida Southern University, where he met the love of his life and future bride, Ellenor Grace McIlvaine. Jim graduated in 1971, and the two were married on July 3, 1971, beginning a devoted marriage that spanned 49 years.
Jim continued his education at Florida International University, earning his MBA. He began his professional career with Southern Bell, which later became BellSouth. In 1981, Jim and Ellen relocated to Roswell, Georgia, where they raised their family. Jim remained with BellSouth throughout his career, retiring in 2009 after decades of dedicated service.
Jim had a deep love for the outdoors and treasured time spent traveling to the Rainbow River in Dunnellon, Florida, where he was passionate about its conservation. Family camping trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina were among his favorite memories. He also enjoyed golf and photography, hobbies that reflected his appreciation for both nature and quiet moments.
A man of faith, Jim was very active at Northbrook United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. After moving to Dunnellon, he became a member of Ocala West United Methodist Church. Jim was known for his laid-back nature, quick wit, and an endless supply of dad jokes that brought smiles to those around him.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen, his parents, Melvene and Loftin Johnson, and his sister, Pamela.
He is survived by his brother, David Johnson (Cathy Hickle), his daughters, Christy Burnham (Matt), Jennifer Orr (Chris), and Beth Dion (Jeff); his grandchildren Paul and Loftin Burnham, Avery, Caitlin, and Emilia Dion; and his cherished dog, Charlie.
Visitation will be held at Jim’s river house beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 12:30 p.m. A small graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.
