Kathryn Inez Williams-Sammons passed away in her Ocala home surrounded by loving family on Sunday, December 18th, 2022. Kathryn passed two months shy of her 90th birthday. Ironically her husband Bunny also passed two months shy of his 90th birthday in 2020.
Kathryn was born February 11th, 1933 in Savannah, Georgia but lived most of her life in Dunnellon, Florida until moving to Ocala, Florida 25 years ago. Kathryn and Bernard Eugene Sammons were married Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949 and celebrated 71 years of marriage. They had six children together.
Due to starting a family at a young age, Kathryn was unable to finish school but continuing her education always remained a goal. Later, as her children were of age and leaving home, Kathryn would get her GED, and pursue her passion of teaching children, including special needs children. Kathryn’s strong Christian faith would lead her to teach Sunday school for both children and adults. Even after retirement she would continue to tutor children at her home. When grandchildren came along she became “Grammie”. After retiring from the Marion County School System, she would pursue her hobbies of growing flowers, nature photography, and volunteering alongside her husband at the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center located at the Silver River State Park in Ocala, Florida. As health issues progressed and mobility became more challenging, Kathryn would enjoy watching old movies, listening to gospel music, observing nature out her window, reading her Bible and daily devotions, visits from her children and grandchildren and playing dominoes with them for hours on end. She would recognize each family members’ birthday with an inspirational greeting card. Thanks to her granddaughter, Charity, Kathryn had a continuous supply of large print library books. She always loved to read but during the last ten years Kathryn would pour through an endless number of books at an incredible speed.
Surviving her are children, Linda Sammons Flick (husband Wayne Flick), Sue Ann Sammons Maynard (husband Danny Maynard), Beverly Gail Sammons Weaver (husband Robert Weaver) and Bernard Eugene Sammons Jr. (wife Carolyn Rankin Sammons). Seven grandchildren survive her; Matthew Flick, Stephen Maynard, Amanda Maynard, Charity Guimaraes, Brett Weaver, Tommy Sammons and David Sammons. She also has 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild surviving her.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; Franklin Hill Williams, Sr and Edwina Williams Carr, one brother Franklin Hill Williams Jr, one sister Edwina Williams Burnett. She was preceded in death by two children; Richard Alan Sammons (1959),and Patricia Sammons Bannister (2018); two grandchildren Marianne Alaine Flick (2021), and Robbie Weaver (2021).
Graveside services will be held at Dunnellon Cemetery on Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 at 1pm. Family and friends are all welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the American Diabetes Association or hospice.
