Richard A. Mortensen, 86, Dunnellon, Florida, died Wednesday June 20, 2012. Mr. Mortensen was born in Hardwick Township, NJ. He dedicated his life to the construction of 6 Episcopal Churches, numerous Boy’s & Girl’s Summer Camps throughout Massachusetts and New England. The interior of these structures were often hand crafted by his skilled hands. Also, he used his master carpenter talents to construct private dwellings and many other structures in Massachusetts as well. He was very skilled in building quarry stone fireplaces and field stone chimneys. He often found “just the right stone” in his travels and while riding his bicycle.
He was a member of the North Oak Baptist Church, Citrus Springs, FL where he was in regular attendance for Sunday School and Bible Study. He volunteered his lay ministry to area nursing homes with his Golden Fellowship Church Group.
He enjoyed the theatre, listening to music, reading and studying history (especially the Civil War and Bridge Construction). He visited many Civil War Battlefields, some of them more than once, with Gettysburg being his particular favorite. He knew the generals, the battle strategies, and the placement of each military unit during the 3 day conflict. In earlier years, he could often be seen riding his bicycle, canoeing, and hiking. He enjoyed nature and spending quality time with his family and friends.
Mr. Mortensen’s smile and firm handshake were two of his major assets; he could brighten the room with his smile and surprise most people with his handshake.
