William John Carey

December 22, 1937 — January 9, 2024

Dunnellon

William J “Willie” Carey, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on January 9th, 2024. He fought courageously through many health issues in the latter part of his life. Courage was in his DNA as he served the City of New York as a fireman in Engine 55 on Broome Street in Little Italy, Manhattan. He was very proud to serve the people of New York and of his brotherhood in FDNY. In his youth, he was a very accomplished swimmer, and he also excelled in basketball. Willie also enjoyed the sport of soccer; he loved coaching his children and watching games. Later in life, he was an avid golfer and had 3 “hole-in-one” honors to his credit. Willie was a master carpenter who could build anything, and he was known as “Mr. Fix-It” because of his ability to repair things with ease. Cruising was another favorite of his, and he made many trips with his wife and friends.

He was a parishioner of St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon.                               Willie shared life in marriage for 66 years with Audrey Carey, who survives him. He is also survived by his children Tara Newport, William M Carey and spouse Connie, Coleen Meccia and Michael J Carey. He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey B Carey and son-in-law Jim Newport.

Willie is survived by grandchildren Dana Stillwagon and spouse Mike, Ken

Jurczyk and spouse Taylor, Jessica Fernandes and spouse Greg, Nicole Carey, William M Carey Jr and spouse Emma, and Gianna Meccia.

Willie is also survived by great-grandchildren Austin Stillwagon, Devyn

Stillwagon, Ayden Attwood, Landon Attwood, Kallie Jurczyk, Evie

Fernandes, Ellis Fernandes and Kamryn Jurczyk.

Willie was preceded in death by his mother Gertrude Weber, stepfather Butch Weber, and father William Arthur Carey.
