Doris Anita Porter, 89, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 12, 2021 in Lecanto, FL. She was born and raised in Hawkinsville, Georgia. She was one of ten children born to the late Morgan and Maggie (Key) Tharpe. Doris received her degree in education from Savannah State University. She taught physical education in Savannah and sixth grade in Columbus Ohio for many years and then she went on to further her education and received her master’s degree from Ohio State University in special education, where she taught special education children before retiring to Florida in 2003 from Columbus. She was very inspirational to people especially the children she taught. Doris was a member of C.H.U.M.S. International, the N.A.A.R.V.A. camping club and a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon. In her spare time Doris enjoyed camping and shopping. She will be greatly missed by all of her loving family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her five sisters.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of sixty five years, William Porter, Dunnellon; her daughters, Sharon Porter, Dunnellon, Anita Pitts, McDonough, GA; her brothers, Morgan Tharpe (Charlotte), Miami, FL, George Tharpe (Gloria), Valdosta, GA, James Tharpe, Lompoc, CA; her sister, Patricia Durham, Hawkinsville, GA; her grandchildren, Johnita Pitts, Daniel Harper, Shayne Pitts and her seven great grandchildren.
A Mass in Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 23, 2021,10:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon with burial to follow at Florida National Cemetery. A public visitation will be held on Monday, March 22, 2021 from 2-5 PM at Roberts Funeral Home of Dunnellon.
