Robert Schmidt Obituary

Robert C. Schmidt, 98, of Citrus Springs, FL, formerly of Carlinville, IL, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2021 at Cedar Creek Assisted Living in Crystal River, FL.

He was born on February 22, 1923 in Carlinville, IL to the late Anthony P. and Frances (Bellm) Schmidt of Carlinville.  He married Thelma Logan on February 11, 1942.  She preceded him in death on October 8, 1994.  He then married Barbara Barr on August 21, 1999. After high school he worked for Wolley’s Hardware and Piggly Wiggley in Carlinville until he was drafted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He then served in the Air Force Reserve until he joined the Army Reserve for a total of 30 years between all three branches. He owned and operated the Texaco Station on Alton Road in Carlinville, IL from 1948 to 1972, then moved to Citrus Springs FL.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Citrus Springs, American Legion Post 58 in Dunnellon, FL for 52 years, serving as Commander of that post for 8 years, District Commander, and Northern Area Commander in the state of Florida.  He was a very active blood donor, having completed 25 whole gallons and 193 units of plasma.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Father Anthony Schmidt, Larry Schmidt and sister Rosemary Pankratz. Son in Law Len Thacker Jr. and two great-great grandchildren Noah Brown and Kelby Garner.

He is survived by his wife, daughters Mary (Ron) Brown of Nashville, IL; Ruth (Ron) Wilton of Carlinville; Nancy (Norman) Shade of Chesterfield, IL; Carol (Billy) Rivers of Bolton, MS; Sandra Thacker of Carlinville; Clara Hicks of Citrus Springs, FL and son Robert T (Lori) Schmidt of Ocala, FL; 17 grandchildren especially his granddaughter, Heather Fritz; 42 great grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren; brothers Rev. Carl Schmidt of Effingham, IL, Joseph Schmidt of Quincy, IL and sister Virginia Drew of Quincy, IL; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives.
