In Loving Memory of Chief Petty Officer Vernon A. Bithell Jr. (USN, Retired)
Chief Petty Officer Vernon A. Bithell Jr., born in Braddock, PA, on May 10, 1942, embarked on his final journey on September 14, 2023. He served his country with unwavering dedication for 27 years in the United States Navy and retired in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Vernon was a man of honor and commitment, both in his military service and his contributions to his community.
Vernon was a beloved figure in his community and proudly served as the Former Post Commander and Honor Guard at VFW Post 6060 in Elizabeth City, NC. He exemplified the values of service, camaraderie, and duty, and he was a pillar of support for his fellow veterans.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon A. Bithell Sr., his mother, Mary Lou (Seko) Perschy, his beloved wife, Anna Marie Bithell, his brother, Danny Bithell, his granddaughter, Vanessa Lynn (Jensen) Amsbary, and his son-in-law, Arron R. Sterling. He is survived by his loving daughters, affectionately known as "the girls," Veronica "Roni"(Kevin) York , Maria "Lou Lou" Bithell, and Teresa Lynne "Tree."
Vernon's legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Justin C. (Asha Bibby, US Army RET) Manley US Army Veteran, Matthew L. (Michaela Lendt) Manley US Army Veteran, Vance L. (Tasha) Jensen US Marine Corps Veteran, Tyler D. Alt, Denver T. Alt US Air Force, and Ava Marie Bevan. His great-grandchildren include Gabriel R. Amsbary, Jocelyn R. Manley, Benjamin D. Manley, Norah A. Jensen, and Carter A. Jensen.
He is also survived by his siblings: Carol( Tony) Cook, Peggy (Pat) McCarragher, Richard (Natasha)Bithell, and Wendy Ferrell
In keeping with his wishes, Chief Petty Officer Bithell requested not to have a viewing, as he often said, "couldn't see me alive, don't come see me dead." Instead, a full military honors ceremony and a celebration of his remarkable life will be determined and announced at a later date.
Chief Petty Officer Vernon A. Bithell Jr. was a man of honor, dedication, and love for his family, his country, and his fellow veterans. He will be remembered for his steadfast service and his favorite motto:
"Go NAVY! Beat ARMY!"
